![]() ![]() ![]() These releases are like public betas and are not recommended for normal play, though it's fun to get a peak at the future of the game. These odd numbered versions implement new features that are being worked into the game, for the next major release, but may not be entirely stable. These releases can take quite a while to develop (nearly a year has passed between 1.4 and 1.6) so there is also an experimental “development” branch of release. Six years and still kicking, much has changed and more is yet to come.ĭevelopment on the game continues to progress, with new releases coming in two forms: the “stable” branch of releases are considered reliable enough for regular play and have even version numbers. Ever since The Battle for Wesnoth has received accolades from the open source community and general gaming sites alike. This has kept the project manageable and helped it reach the 1.0 milestone in 2005. To this end the developers have always kept to the K.I.S.S principle, in that they won't add something to the game if it's going to complicate the gameplay in a negative way. Through it all the core gameplay mechanics have remained intact, with inspiration from games like “ Master of Monsters” and “ Warsong.” In the beginning, the goal of Wesnoth's founder, David White, was to create a game that was easy to learn and play, yet fun and challenging. Wesnoth is a game of strategy and tactical thinking that is deep yet accessible and has undergone many changes in it's six years of development not only aesthetically but in terms of features and content. This has allowed them to not only keep updating regularly, but also give gamers a chance to contribute and be part of the team, gaining valuable experience in the process. Where most projects of this type have failed, Wesnoth has thrived, in part by heavily involving it's community to help share the workload. However “The Battle for Wesnoth” is just that and more. But to find a 100% free game that is actually complete, polished, moddable and has 100+ hours of gameplay? That's a bit more difficult. ![]() I don't think there has ever been a game that i can say that about. There is no shortage of free game projects available on the Internet, as a quick Google search can prove. I've played this game for 15 or so years now and i still enjoy it thoroughly. ![]() Im heavily biased because the nostalgia runs deep. Age of Lords and Era Of Magic are both well put together mods. Download some community created Eras and have fun with custom armies others have made. Find a friend or two that likes strategy games and challenge them to a few matches. The mobile version is crossplay between Android and ios. You can also download the game from its website, and also mobile has its own version as well. Playing against friends though is where its at. (more players the longer it lasts.) Heavy RNG elements though so fighting the AI can be oppressing, but if you play terrain and keep a close eye on the time of day you can win fights that you normally wouldn't. The games don't last insanely long like some Civ or Stellaris games but definitely can span 1 or 2 sessions. This game has come so far thanks to amazing community. if you get into the code its not too hard to make your own era with custom units. Great open source game with a lot of mods. Been playing this game since probably 08 with my Dad and my Brother. ![]()
